AgeWell New York sponsored the Feria de Salud event which is the ADA’s signature Latino outreach program in the Greater New York City market, held at St. Mary’s Recreation Center and Park in the South Bronx. This event reaches more than 5,000 visitors with the important message they might be at risk for diabetes. This event serves as a kick-off celebration to Hispanic Heritage Month. Feria de Salud (literally “Celebration of Health”) showcases a spectrum of health services, diabetes care products, screenings and health education information and promotes the importance of making healthy choices. It is also designed to raise awareness of personal health issues and how they impact one’s quality of life. Several sponsored activities demonstrate the variety of choices available to improve personal diet and increase physical fitness. The outdoor event, which is free to the public, has a family-oriented fiesta environment. The day’s festivities include live entertainment, games, nutritional information, speakers on topics related to diabetes, cooking demonstrations and a variety of product and service booths.
